  Chapter One

For the tenth time since she’d left work, Erica Neilson wondered what the heck she was doing. She sighed, spying the large group of people congregating around the bar at the local RSL club, her workmates’ favourite watering hole. She had her friend Nicole to thank for being there tonight. She scanned the group again, looking for her crazy friend, finding her towards the back of the room playing a lively game of darts with a couple of the new medical students. One of them checked her out with more than a little bit of interest. Erica looked him over and he wasn’t half bad.

Her friend always attracted men like flies. She loved her to pieces but she sometimes envied Nicole’s easy confidence and femininity that never failed to draw a crowd of appreciative males. Nicole’s face lit up with a mischievous grin while she flung her arms around her in a tight hug.

“You came,” she whispered in her ear before releasing her and stepping back.

“Of course I came. I promised I would.”

Nicole giggled. “Yeah, well, you weren’t too enthusiastic about it. I was expecting you to find some excuse and blow me off again.”

She blinked, remembering how she’d almost done exactly that, but since she’d stayed home the last two times Nicole had asked her to join them she’d figured she’d better bite the bullet this time.

Nicole laughed again, and winked at her. “Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me. I won’t tell Jack.”

Jack? Oh crap, I forgot it was his last day. That’s why they had asked her to come. Thank goodness she’d given in to her guilt and had turned up. “I came because I didn’t want to let you down again. I’d forgotten all about Jack to be honest.” She smiled.

“It doesn’t matter why you’re here, sweetie. I’m just glad you are. You need to have some fun.”

“I have fun.” Every night. When I’m asleep.

Nicole coughed. “Sure you do, hun,” she said, handing over her darts to one of her adoring crowd. “But you need to start taking some chances. Take your clothes for instance.”

Erica looked down at her tidy grey business suit and plain black flats. “What’s wrong with my clothes? They’re my work clothes.”

“Sure, they’re very practical, but you could jazz them up a little, honey. You’ve got great curves. You should flaunt them a little.”

Erica blushed as Michelle, one of the nurses from the hospital where she worked, sidled up next to Nicole and joined in. “You sure do, sweetie. You need to stop hiding under all those boring old suits.”

Oh great. Does everyone have an opinion on my life? “I’m a manager. I have to look professional. This suit is my uniform.”

Nicole and Michelle shared a look before Nicole leaned in close to whisper. “Sure, honey, but there’s wearing a suit, and then there’s wearing a suit.”

“I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about.”

Nicole moved in front of Erica and undid the top three buttons of her blouse.

“Hey! What are you doing? This is a work function. I have a reputation to uphold.”

Nicole stepped back. Both she and Michelle stared at Erica, thoughtful looks on their faces. So this is what a piece of meat feels like.

Her fingers reached up to redo the buttons, but Nicole swatted her hands out of the way. “No, honey, leave it as it is. Trust me, you look fabulous.”

She looked down at her ample cleavage, now on view for the entire world to see. “I seriously doubt that.”

Nicole laughed. “Sure you do, and with a few more touches, you’ll be the knockout I always knew you to be.”

Before she had a chance to ask what they had in mind Nicole had removed the pins from her tight bun and was shaking Erica’s long blonde curls around her shoulders.

Michelle produced a makeup bag and shuffled through the myriad of bottles and tubes. “You know, honey, you’d look really great in this new shade of lipstick I bought yesterday.”

Erica stepped back, her arms folded across her chest. “Hey, what is this? Let’s make over Erica night?”

“Why not. You’re always complaining that you never get to meet any guys. Here’s your chance.”

“It’s not my clothes. I just never have time to go out and meet anyone.”

Both her friends stared at her, their smiles frozen in exactly the same way. Erica gazed past them, noticing an appreciative look from a guy across the bar. He winked and saluted her with his glass. She blushed, turning away quickly. Sheesh. That had never happened before.

Okay, maybe they had a point about her clothes.

“All right then. Maybe I’m willing to admit I could do with a little brightening up.”

The other girls laughed as they dragged her towards the ladies’ room. “Cool,” said Nicole. “This is going to be so much fun.”

Erica’s head was spinning a short time later when she found herself standing in a group of gorgeous people, drinking and laughing more than she’d ever done in her life. Maybe it was the new look her friends had thrust upon her. More likely it was the third margarita she was sucking through a straw like a Slurpee. She’d discovered that she didn’t even have to say all that much when half her boobs were hanging out of her blouse
. Funnily enough the men were falling over themselves to speak to her. Considering she wasn’t showing any of her usual reticence, it must have been at least in part owing to the margaritas, but she really did feel different.

What the heck, she was having fun. She tapped Nicole on the shoulder, gesturing for her to join her in a recently vacated booth.

As Nicole sat down opposite her, Erica grasped her hand. “Thanks for a great night, Nic. You’re a good friend, you know that?”

“Hey, no worries, sweetie. You deserve some fun.”

“Yes, I am having fun. Who would have thought?”

“Yeah, who woulda?” Nicole giggled, as they clinked glasses. “I always knew you had it in you, and not just because of the margaritas. Just make sure you hold on to the new attitude, okay?”

“A few exotic drinks and letting my hair down on one occasion doesn’t really count as a life change, Nic, so I can’t promise I won’t go back to my old boring ways.”

Nicole gave her a wicked smile. “Not to worry, my friend. I have an idea that will blast those boring ways out of the water for good. Are you game?”

“Stop smirking at me, you’re making me nervous!”

“C’mon Erica. Play along, it’ll be fun.”

“I have a feeling I’m going to regret this,” she said before picking up her glass, draining the last of it and slamming it down on the table. “What did you have in mind?”

Nicole leant back against her seat. “For this to work you have to promise me you won’t back out on me.”

Erica laughed. “Now you’re really making me nervous.”

Her friend’s expression was serious. “You’ll just have to trust me. Would I ask you to do anything I wouldn’t do myself?”

A large flock of butterflies took up residence in Erica’s stomach, but one look at her best friend’s mischievous grin and she couldn’t refuse her. Not this time. Besides, she’d had fun so far tonight, hadn’t she? “Okay.” Gulp. “I think.” As her mother used to say—in for a penny in for a pound. She took a deep breath and spoke quickly before she changed her mind. “All right, let me have it. What do I have to do?”

“I was thinking of a little wager.”

  “What? You mean a bet?”

“Bet, wager…the results are the same.”

“But why a bet? Why not just get me to do some little task?”

“Because a bet raises the stakes. Win or lose, it has more of an impact. Don’t look so worried. It’s just a little more incentive for you, sweetie.”

  “I don’t know about this.”

“Oh come on, Erica. You can’t back out now, you agreed.”

She couldn’t resist her when she showed her that little girl pout. “Fine. So what do I have to do?”

“I’ve decided to add a bit of competition into the mix now that I’ve got your attention.” She checked her wristwatch. “Your task is simple. Okay, it’s nine thirty p.m. You have until ten thirty p.m. to pick a man you’ve never met before, grab him by the collar, and kiss him senseless.”

The blood rushed to Erica’s head until all she heard was the pounding of her pulse in her ears. Had Nic really just asked her to get up close and personal with a complete stranger? She reached out to take a sip of her drink, but her hand shook so much she gave up, putting her traitorous limb on her lap under the table. Breathe. Just breathe. “What happens if I don’t do it in time?”

“Oh this is the fun part. If you don’t make it in time, then I get to choose a suitable punishment.”

“What? What do you mean punishment?”

Nicole smiled at her coyly. “Oh don’t worry, you’ll like it.”

“I guess I’ll just have to take your word for that.” Visions of being thrown across a gorgeous hunk’s lap and being bare-arsed spanked crossed her mind. I’m beginning to regret that night I told Nicole about when my ex spanked me, and how much I liked it. Erica brushed her hand across her forehead, wiping away the trickle of sweat that was heading towards her eyes. “So what happens if I do make it in time?”

“You get to take me to one of your family dinners.”

“What? You’d willingly put yourself in the path of my big brother? You told me you never wanted to see Jake again!”

“Now you know how serious I am. I know you have this bizarre idea that your brother and I would make a good couple, so even though I can’t stand him, I’ll gladly agree to have dinner with him. If it will help get you to let loose and enjoy yourself for a change. You know Jake would agree with me on that one.”

“Sure he would, although I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t like hearing that I’m throwing myself at complete strangers.”

“Oh I don’t know. This is a pretty safe environment. A public place. Loads of friends around. What’s not safe about that?”

When she put it like that it didn’t sound quite so scary. Maybe. “I guess so.”

  “So what’s stopping you?”

“I’m just trying to get my head around it, Nic. Let me scope out the room and look for possible candidates.”

“Sure, fine. But don’t take too long. It’s nine forty now. Time’s a wasting.” Nicole slipped out of the booth and stood up. “I’ll leave you to do your shopping. I’m heading to the bathroom. I’ll get us some refills on my way back. Margarita again?”

Erica shook her head. “I think I’ve already had enough of those.” She laughed. “And since I could probably do with a clearer head I might just have a sparkling mineral water this time, thanks.”

“Are you sure? You seem quite partial to those cocktails. Don’t you pike on me!”

  “Don’t worry. I promised I’d do it.”

“All righty then. I’ll be back soon.”

Erica leant forward in the booth and looked around at the crowd in the bar. Three men stood beside the jukebox, all sharing a joke together. After taking in their leather jackets and torn jeans, she shifted her line of vision to their faces. Um…no, the unshaved rough-edged look definitely wasn’t for her.

Next she spied a group of young suits ogling every girl who was unlucky enough to walk past them. No thanks. She definitely wasn’t into young boys. She began to despair that she wouldn’t find anyone suitable at all when the man who’d lifted his glass to her earlier walked past her booth to the other end of the bar. He sat down next to another man and slapped him on the back.

Crap, maybe he was gay. Just her luck. He was the most promising candidate so far. In fact the more she looked, the more she liked. He was tall and his broad shoulders filled out his suit just nicely. He must’ve spent a bit of time outdoors because his skin was nicely tanned, which highlighted his chocolate brown eyes—and he had that Colin Farrell eyebrow thing going for him. Erica closed her eyes for a minute, visualising the scene.

His eyes widened when she took hold of his collar, pulling herself closer to him, their lips so close she could taste the bitter tang of the Corona he was drinking. She sighed, inching nearer, her lips tingling in anticipation.

  “Here’s your drink, sweetie.”

Crap. She opened her eyes, her skin burning up with embarrassment. God forbid anyone had seen her sighing and moaning with her eyes shut. “Thanks, hun,” she said, sipping her drink slowly, in an effort to calm down. Focus, girl. Make some normal conversation. Maybe she won’t tease you about being off in lala-land dreaming about a man you haven’t met yet. It had to be the margaritas. My new favourite drink. She smiled at her friend, although she should’ve been mad at her. Nicole was really pushing her limits tonight. She wondered why she was going along with it. Usually she’d have laughed it off and left early, but tonight she felt different. Sexy even. She looked at the man in question one more time and found him looking directly at her. When he saw her he smiled.

  Oh. My. God.

She swore she could feel her panties dampen at the sight of his gorgeous face.

“Hey, he’s cute. You gonna do him?”

Huh? She coughed, almost spilling her drink. “Do h
im? Hang on, the bet was just for a kiss. Nothing else.” She wiped up the wet spot under her glass with a napkin, willing her speeding heartbeat to slow down.

“Hey, that’s what I meant. What did you think I meant?” she said.

“Um. I guess I’m just getting carried away with nerves. I thought you were suggesting I had sex with him.”

Nicole cocked an eyebrow. “Well, that wouldn’t be such a hardship, would it? He’s bloody gorgeous.”

The scary thing was that it didn’t seem such a bad idea to her at that moment and that thought shocked her more than anything. Time to put on the brakes a little. “Hey, one step at a time. I have to build up the nerve to kiss him first.”

“Well, you’d better hurry up. You only have”—Nicole looked at her watch again—“twenty minutes left. The line at the bar was horrendous.”

Oh crap. Twenty minutes. She’d wasted all that time daydreaming and now if she didn’t get herself together she’d lose the bet. To be honest she didn’t really care about the bet, but she did want to break out of her conservative mould tonight and if it meant kissing a stranger then she was going to do it.

  Maybe.

Okay, yes, she would. She’d just go freshen up one last time first. She eased her way out of the booth and stood up. “I’ll head to the ladies’ room one last time for some Dutch courage, then I’m right on it.”

Nicole placed a hand on her arm. “You’re not going to chicken out on me at the last minute, are you?”

Tempting. Tempting. Don’t be such a baby. “No, Nic. I’m not going to pike. Just one last pit stop to help me catch my breath.”

“You’d better hurry, girlfriend,” she said, tapping her watch. “Eight minutes to go!”

Darn. “Okay, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

The blood pounding in her ears didn’t let up while she made her way to the ladies’ room. She quickly reapplied her lipstick and tidied her hair and took a deep breath to calm herself. It’s now or never. She walked back into the room and headed directly towards the bar looking for Mister Right Now. She looked from one end of the bar to the other.
